I've been thinking of Weeknight Society as a bit of a "mother's little helper." It's like Valium only way less expensive. Or wine, but without the pesky hangover. The goal of Weeknight Society is to make you look like a hero at the dinner table. We can't win every moment of every day, but if we can make dinner a winning moment - we can feel like winner.
I want to make sure I introduce you to other "mother's little helpers" along this journey. I can't tell you how addicted I am to my steamer. It's my helper. It's my problem solver. I used to take one to do TV segments and I'd heat up the food with it so the food looked better on camera (gross, I know.)
In real life I hate to iron so when we have to de-wrinkle something I use either the dryer or a steamer. Conair just sent me their Turbo Extreme Steam steamer to try out and it's AWESOME. It heats up faster, gets hotter, and has a built in de-creaser so you aren't left with huge wrinkles.
For Thanksgiving this year I wanted to use burlap on the table. I had a huge amount of burlap left from years ago that's been jammed in my fabric bin. Burlap seemed like the perfect way to make my new fancy china look less formal on the table. But burlap that's been jammed in a bin in the storage room is extremely hard to get wrinkles out of. Like extremely.
Just making the burlap lay flat looked like it would never happen. So I steamed it. Brilliant.
I came up with a Thanksgiving menu that is just as simple and just as quick. A Citrus Roasted Turkey Breast with roasted potatoes & carrots that cooks in the oven while you make a pot of Pumpkin Soup on the stove. My latest vegetarian side dishes, Millet with Brussel Sprouts and Roasted Vegetable Quinoa are a lot healthier than traditional sides (and just as tasty) AND can be made the day ahead!
