I will honestly say that the Insta-Pot has never really seemed like something I needed. I have heard legends of it's greatness - it makes pasta in three minutes - rice in six - pot roast in 90!
Here's the deal. Quick dinners are kind of my thing. It's pretty much the reason I have a job right now. It's literally what I do. And not Insta-pot quick dinners, but legit, "I made it on the stove" quick dinners. I have made nearly 200 recipes in the last two years that attest to that skill. When you put "special skills" on a resume, that's what I've got.
Making pasta in 20 instead of in three doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I can't even set the table in 3 minutes. But I was asked to give it a whirl. I reached out to my girl gang of Insta-pot lovers to get their tips, their best practices, and a few recipes. Here's what I learned
1. The Instant Pot is perfect for those who love the crock pot dinners, but aren't able to get the ingredients in the pot in the morning. Your basic crock pot dinner can be done in 45 minutes. Enough time to put on sweat pants and have a glass of wine.
2. Cooking times don't take into account the time it takes the machine to come up to pressure or the time to release the pressure. While noodles are actually cooked in three minutes, it takes about 10 minutes to come up to pressure and an additional 3-5 minutes to release pressure. While that's still about 20 minutes, I have lots of recipes that I can make in 20 minutes.
3. Once every thing is in the pot and you've gotten the thing started, you can basically walk away. I took my kids to practice and ran to the drug store while Kahlua Pork was cooking and I got waylaid. By the time I got home, it was finished, depressurized, and ready to eat. That was lovely. Like a crock pot but only done in an hour.
For my lifestyle, I don't see this as a tool that's needed. If you are a crock pot lover, you will love this thing. It's like a beloved crock pot only way, way faster. I can see myself making something in it at taking it to a tailgate or a potluck party. You can make a quick chili, shower while it cooks, then take it after it's done cooking and let it depressurize in the car. It will be hot and lovely when you get there.
I'll probably come up with a bunch of recipes to post here because I'm intrigued by the whole thing. Do you know it was the #1 seller on Amazon Prime Day 2016? That means a really big number of you own one of these things.
